Guyana remain unbeaten in team championships

GUYANA remained the only unbeaten country in the Western Union/Supligen Caribbean Junior Squash team championships, beating Jamaica girls in the first session yesterday and wrapping up Wednesday by defeating Jamaica boys at Georgetown Club.

In the final session on the opening day Wednesday, Guyana boys beat Jamaica, 4-1, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), also, had a 4-1 victory over the Bahamas and Bermuda took care of Barbados, 3-2.


Guyana’s Gerard Greaves beat Brad Low in the Under-19 (1) after five games, 8-10, 7-9, 9-7, 9-7, 9-1, while reserve player Stanley Marcus Jr was used in the Under-19 (2) to disposed of Michael Anderson in straight games, 9-4, 9-2, 9-1.


In the Under-17 match, Damien Da Silva made light work of David Patterson, 9-0, 9-6, 9-1, while Raphael De Groot took care of Adam Hugh in the Under-13 match, 9-0, 9-5, 9-1.


However, Kristian Jeffrey went down to Chris Binnie in the Under-15 match, 9-7, 9-0, 9-0 for Guyana’s only loss.


Dominique Rivers needed four games to put away Bahamian Chad Rolle in the Under-19(1) match for the OECS, 10-9, 7-9, 9-1, 9-2, and Jason Lang beat Delano Ferguson in the Under-19 (2) match, 9-7, 9-7, 9-7.


The Under-17 match went to Adam Slater with a 9-1, 9-6, 9-1 victory over Scott Jupp, while Diarra Venner conceded just four points in the last game to defeat Glenardo Smith in the Under-13 match, 9-0, 9-0, 9-4. Only Marlon James was not victorious for the OECS, going 3-9, 3-9, 9-3, to Cliff Bodie in the Under-15 match.


Bermuda beat Barbados in the Under-19 and Under-17 matches, but Barbados fought back in the Under-15 and Under-13 encounters. James Stout put away Steven Miller in the Under-19(1) match, 9-0, 9-2, 9-3, and Andrew Robinson took care of Alex Garcia, 9-1, 9-2, 9-3, in the Under-19(2) clash.


The third victory went to Michael Shrubb who need four games to beat Rhett Cumberbatch in the Under-17 match, 5-9, 9-5, 9-6, 10-8.


Barbados clinched wins as expected through Bryant Cumberbatch over Robert Maycock in the Under-15 match, 9-0, 9-2, 9-1, and Akil Ross who need four games to dispose of Robert Forbes, 10-9, 2-9, 9-6, 9-0 in the Under-13 match.


Yesterday morning, Guyana girls beat Jamaica, 4-1, Barbados defeated OECS, 5-0, and Trinidad & Tobago etched a 3-2 win over Bermuda.


Opponents for Andrea King and Tiffany Solomon were not available so they won their respective Under-19 matches by default, while Kristina King beat Tracy Binnie, 9-5, 9-2, 9-3 and Daina King put away Haley Foreman in the Under-13 match, 9-2, 9-1, 6-9, 9-0.


However, Dominique Dias went down to Kristine Bell in the Under-15 match, 2-9, 1-9, 9-6, 0-9.


Barbados’ players were in fine form against the OECS, with Sherice Mac Donald conceding just two points to beat Nicole De Gale, 9-1, 9-0, 9-1 in the Under-19(1) match and Maia Bell defeating Christianne Andrew-Rose, 9-0, 9-4, 9-1 in the Under-19(2).


Nadia Mc Carthy gave up three points in the first game to beat Christa Bonnet , 9-3, 9-0, 9-0 in the Under-17, while Bo Harris took care of Amber Glasgow, 9-6, 9-0, 9-0 in the Under-15 match and Cheri-Ann Parris lost one pont in beating Sherina Slater, 9-1, 9-0, 9-0 in the Under-13.


Trinidad & Tobago won match on the court, yet triumphed over Bermuda, whose Under-19(2) and Under-13 players were not available and Trinidad’s Nakita Poon Kong and Emily Bones won by default.


Bermuda’s Katy Lennox beat Joanna Scoon in the Under-17 match, 9-0, 9-2, 9-1 and Laura Robinson put away Tessa Martin in the Under-15 match, 9-4, 9-1, 9-0.


Jamie Galt gave Trinidad and Tobago the lone on court win in the Under-19(1) match, beating Jessica Mitchell, 9-5, 9-0, 4-9, 9-3.
